I’m very happy to announce that I’m illustrating a book by North Carolina musician Stephen Roach, of the band Songs of Water. It’s called “Satchel Willoughby and the Realm of Lost Things”. I’m doing the book in watercolor and pencil, a little bit of a departure from my usual jewel-color acrylics, but the book needed a timeless, slightly aged feel (is that an oxymoron?), so I opted for a sepia wash, a ton of wet-on-wet, frisket raining down from heaven, and got out every Lisbeth Zwerger book I could find at the library.
Working with Stephen is simply effortless. I think because we share a musical language, the verbal and visual pretty much fall in line and we’ve been able to understand each other’s vision for the book. Stephen chose to self-publish precisely so we could keep our creative conversation small, but our partnership with the community large. You can partner with Stephen as he self-publishes by visiting his Indie GoGo site and giving a donation.
The book will be available in time for Christmas 2010! If you would like to have Stephen or I visit your school to do a reading/signing/illustration demo, please contact Stephen or myself.
